Eating Gluten-Free at Mon Ami Gabi

Mon Ami Gabi in Bethesda, MD

Mon Ami Gabi in Bethesda, MD

Mon Ami Gabi is one of my favorite restaurants in Bethesda, MD. It offers a separate gluten free menu and most of the items on the regular menu can be made gluten free. The waiters are very knowelegable about gluten and take food interolerances seriously. There are also many low carb and paleo friendly dishes.

I love bringing my friends and family from out of town when they visit because there is something for everyone on the menu and they love it too! I use any excuse to have brunch or dinner here.

See below for some examples of what I order when dining at Mon Ami Gabi.

Complimentary Gluten Free Bread

Complimentary Gluten Free Bread

I usually get the gluten free bread to start. Mon Ami Gabi has the best gluten free bread. I typically opt out of any gluten free bread offered at restaurants because it often isn't very good and I prefer to eat lower carb even when dining out. However, the gluten free bread offered here is worth the splurge. Also, the butter served with the bread is worth the pimples I will have the next day, since this is not something I indulge in often.

Grilled Pork Tenderloin

The filet mignon and grilled pork tenderloin off the gluten free menu are so good! Both of the meals come with shallow-fry frites (fries), which are also good but I usually am too full to eat more than a few of them. You can also substitute vegetables for the fries!

Not pictured, but a few other items I have enjoyed at Mon Ami Gabi are the Salmon Baby Kale Salad and Eggs Benedict with gluten free toast. I will add to this list as I try more!

Vanilla Crème Brûlée

Vanilla Crème Brûlée

I rarely order dessert at restaurants. Many times there is nothing on the menu that is gluten free, and if there are gluten free options they are often too sugary for my taste. So when I want to indulge in a restaurant dessert for a special occasion I go to Mon Ami Gabi for the Crème Brûlée. This Crème Brûlée is amazing! It is not too sweet and the perfect size for sharing. Note this dessert is not dairy free. I usually do not order items with dairy, because dairy makes my skin break out, but since Crème Brûlée is made with heavy cream it doesn't affect my skin as much as cheese or milk. If you are looking for a dairy free option there is the sorbet which is also very good. They offer different flavors depending on the day.

Overall, Mon Ami Gabi is a great choice for those who eat gluten free, paleo, or low carb. I make a few choices here that I don't normally make when eating out: gluten free bread, dessert. I plan for these choices and don't go crazy. I always try to remember that you are defined by the things you do every day, not once in a while. I do what makes me feel good and if these choices made me feel bad I would stop. I leave Mon Ami Gabi happy from having the experience of eating out with friends or family and with a happy belly.
